Chapter Eight

Daniel decided to visit the office of Richardson and Jamison to find out how Harry spent his day. Michael said he couldn’t interfere, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t be curious. Of course he had to remain invisible since Harry knew what he looked like. Since he didn’t know exactly where the man’s office was located he decided to wait outside Harry’s apartment building and then follow him.

Harry came out shortly after Daniel arrived. Daniel followed him to the bus stop. Where is his car? The bus arrived. Harry boarded and Daniel did too. The driver spoke to Harry like they were old friends. Some of the other passengers spoke to him too and entertained him with conversation like this wasn’t the first time he’d taken the bus. Harry sat down, opened his briefcase and pulled out a novel.

Daniel peeped inside the case expecting to find legal files or something related to work. Instead, he found a couple of tablets, some pens and leftover pizza in a plastic food bag. About thirty minutes after he boarded Harry rang for the driver to stop. He waved goodbye to the other riders and got off in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. Harry spoke to some of the men hanging out on the corner and then entered a building.

The sign outside read, ‘Richardson and Marshall’ not ‘Richardson and Jamison’. Daniel followed Harry inside. The place looked like it had seen better days. Harry put his briefcase on a desk in the administration office, turned on the television and then sat down at the desk and turned on the computer.

Daniel looked down at the name plate. “Harry Jamison, legal secretary.” Darn. He really wanted this to turn out differently. He left the office wondering why Harry had lied to Tanisha. Oh, yeah, she wouldn’t give him the time of day if she knew he wasn’t a lawyer. Daniel went back home to prepare dinner for his charge and to wash her clothing.

“You’re back,” Tanisha said when she entered the kitchen after arriving home from work.

“Yes,” Daniel said. “I went to the Neutral Zone to meditate.”

“Oh,” Tanisha said. “Do you have a problem?”

“Not anymore.”

“You know you can talk to me about anything.” She tried to put her hand on his shoulder but he moved.

“Dinner is ready. I fixed your favorite—macaroni and cheese and baked chicken.”

“My favorite is macaroni and cheese and fried chicken,” Tanisha informed him.

“Baked chicken is healthier for you,” Daniel said.

“I better go change,” Tanisha said. “Will you stay and eat with me?”

“I’m not hungry,” Daniel said. “But I will sit and watch you.”

Tanisha left the kitchen. There was something definitely wrong with Daniel. The light when he looked at her was gone from his eyes. Maybe he’d gotten into some trouble with the other angels or maybe he and his angel girlfriend had gotten into an argument. She wouldn’t pry. Maybe she could get him to help her decide on a honeymoon location. Tanisha showered, changed her clothing and then walked back into the kitchen.
